Chef Joel Gamoran wants you to love what you eat without wasting food. The National Chef of Sur La Table and host of the hit A&E show Scraps will show us how to make vibrantly delicious food from his trailblazing cookbook, Cooking Scrappy, that reshapes the way we look at ingredients in our kitchens and world. Raised in Seattle (yes, he attended SJCC’s Early Childhood School!) and trained at The Culinary Institute of America, Joel’s embrace of the “scrappy attitude” also embodies the Jewish value of not wasting. Welcome Joel back to Seattle and back to the SJCC for its 50th anniversary with a celebration brunch of his wonderful dishes preceded by onstage banter and signed books for everyone attending.
In support of SJCC’s 50th anniversary, Joel is donating a private cooking class in the new test kitchen he is building for seven lucky people.
“In Cooking Scrappy, many recipes … remind me of my mother and aunts’ cooking when I was a child. … Joel teaches you how to save money and respect ingredients while creating wonderful dishes!” — Jacques Pépin, author and host of Jacques Pépin: Fast Food My Way, and Jacques Pépin: The Art of the Craft
“Cooking Scrappy is one of the best cookbooks I’ve read in years. Gamoran is an ingenious chef with an exuberant voice who draws you into the kitchen. This book’s recipes and underlying message couldn’t be more timely.”— Michael Ruhlman, author of The French Laundry Cookbook, Ratio, and Grocery: The Buying and Selling of Food in America
