Washington Travel Spotlight: Ohme Gardens in Wenatchee

Ohme Gardens in Wenatchee

Ohme Gardens in Wenatchee are a hidden enchantment

written by Sheila G. Miller

The Ohme Gardens in Wenatchee are an oasis that was never meant to be shared. When Herman and Ruth Ohme bought 40 acres of land in Wenatchee in 1929, they planned an orchard. One section of the land was so beautiful, with its view of the Cascade Mountains and the Columbia River, that the pair set to building a private garden.

It was a massive project—transplanting trees, hauling buckets of water and stone to the site, and turning the area into a lush, green landscape. The Ohmes planned the gardens to be a private family spot, but eventually opened it to the public.

Today, the 9-acre property is owned and managed by Chelan County and the Ohme Gardens in Wenatchee live on. It’s filled with green spots perfect for photo ops and breathtaking scenery—look for the Hobbit Bench and the Sylvan Pool, or get off the beaten path with a walk to two other pools or Enchantment Falls.

A popular wedding site, the park is open seven days a week from April 15 to October 15. Adults enter for $8, ages 6 to 17 are $4 and kids 5 and under are free to explore the Ohme Gardens in Wenatchee.
