It’s hard to get excited about cooking in the spice aisle of a grocery store. But take a look at Spiva Cooking spice blends, and your appetite goes into high gear. Spiva’s large range of blends are designed to elevate homemade cooking. There’s blackberry rub, buttery buffalo, pineapple chipotle, PNW mocha meat rub, applewood smoked ranch, spitfire shawarma and cranberry orange, to name just a few.
When COVID forced Sam and Heather Spiva to redefine their career paths, the Bremerton couple, both graduates of the Culinary Institute of America, began importing fresh spices from all over the world, hand-grinding them and creating interesting, richly flavorful blends. In the years since, they have rapidly expanded their collection to thirty-six spices, as well as teas and baking mixes.
“COVID was the kick we needed to start our own business, something we’d been dreaming of doing for a long time,” Sam said. “We’ve received amazing feedback from our customers, and it’s really gratifying to know that in some small way, we’re a catalyst for people coming together around their own kitchen tables.”
Spiva releases a new, limited spice created each month, and its top-selling blends are trufflicious, pineapple chipotle and smoky maple blueberry. There’s nothing ordinary about its teas either, whose flavors include golden milk, nettle mint, spiced English breakfast, blood orange and strawberry rhubarb. Look for Spiva products at Ace Hardware, specialty grocery and butchery shops, at the Spiva store in Bremerton and online.
