You never quite know what you’ll find on the menu at Hogstone Wood Oven or Ælder. At Hogstone, opened in 2013, you can choose from an assortment of rotating pizzas, but you might also get beets with onion petals and blackberry cooked in hay (shockingly delicious), or raw milk ice cream with brown butter, plum, fennel pollen and crispy honey. During the warmer months, you can enjoy your food from Hogstone outside. Next door, little sister Ælder, which opened in 2017, is all grown up. Patrons can order tasting menus in advance (walk-ins can sometimes make it in, but don’t risk it). Here, you’re completely in the hands of chef Jay Blackinton, who has been nominated for the James Beard Federation’s Rising Star Chef award for the past four years, and was on Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs list in 2017.
